FAI Guided Tours of Leonardo Campus and Renzo Piano Foundation
Visiting the Politecnico means not only discovering one of the most prestigious institutions in Italy for higher education, but also taking a journey through the history of Milanese architecture, starting from the 1920s when the Leonardo Campus was founded.
Beyond Via Bonardi lies the expansion of the Campus, developed after World War II. It includes buildings constructed during the presidency of Piero Portaluppi with the first nucleus of the Faculty of Architecture, the iconic buildings designed under the direction of Gio Ponti—such as the celebrated Trifoglio and Nave—the completion of the School of Architecture and Urban Studies by Vittoriano Viganò, and the most recent transformations coordinated by Renzo Piano.
In 2022, the Renzo Piano Foundation inaugurated its new headquarters in the heart of the Leonardo Campus, on the first floor of the Nave building. This documentation, research, and meeting center houses a library, the archival collection “Archivio Renzo Piano 1964–1977”, and flexible spaces for workshops, study, meetings, and lectures. The Foundation was created to bring young people closer to more than sixty years of Renzo Piano’s architectural practice, preserving and making accessible a large part of his projects and models.
Visitors will also have the chance to see the reproduction of Pablo Picasso’s Guernica in the Central Library and Giorgio De Chirico’s painting Hector and Andromache, also housed within the Library. Both works are centered on the theme of war.
