MSc in Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering deals with the planning, design, construction, management and maintenance of structures and infrastuctures. These include facilities that play a fundamental role in everyday life of people, such as bridges, tunnels, dams, buildings for energy production, systems of water collection, distribution and disposal, and transportation systems (roads, railways, harbours, airports).

In nowadays industrial society, buildings, waterworks and infrastructures are among the most important durable goods, both for their intrinsic value and for the role they play in the economic and social development of any country.

The accomplishment of these works requires increasingly higher security and functionality levels to be fulfilled. It also involves the usage of natural resources and energy consumption, which significantly affect economy and environment, and the effects of which are protracted over time, spanning several generations. Accordingly, Civil Engineers are committed to operating in such a way that any growth process follows appropriate sustainability standards.

Admission with a foreign qualification

In the two-year MSc programme, students complete the training gained during the bachelor’s degree programme, to achieve an education adequate to the demands of a rapidly changing world of work. This is in line with the regulations of most European countries, in which the second-level diploma (MSc), achieved after five years of university education, is clearly preferred to the BSc, and is often explicitly required for entering into employment in the field of Civil Engineering.

The graduate programme aims at strengthening the basic training of students and, at the same time, at providing them with an adequate knowledge of the core subjects of Civil Engineering. To this end, the MSc offers four different tracks, corresponding to as many suggested study plans (PSPA), which allow students to specialize in either one of the following fields: Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Transportation Infrastructures, and Structures.

The specialization tracks Geotechnics and Structures are entirely taught in English. The other tracks consist mostly of subjects taught in Italian.

Engineers having obtained the MSc degree find job opportunities in the following areas:

  • offices and companies involved in the design of buildings, plants and infrastructures;
  • construction and maintenance companies involved in civil works, plants and civil infrastructures;
  • universities and higher education research institutions;
  • public offices involved in the design, planning, management and control of urban and land systems;
  • service companies dealing with the urban and environmental impact of infrastructures;
  • companies, government offices, agencies, consortia and management agencies for surveying and monitoring.

Students achieving the MSc in Civil Engineering are entitled to access the PhD Programmes offered by the School of Doctoral Programmes of Politecnico di Milano (“Scuola di Dottorato di Ricerca”).

Politecnico di Milano also offer Specializing Masters (“Master Universitario di secondo livello”), 2nd level Specialization Courses (“Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello”) and other Postgraduate Programmes.
