MSc in Music and Acoustic Engineering

The Master of Science in Music and Acoustic Engineering is designed for students interested in understanding, designing, and developing advanced technologies for sound, acoustics, and music. The programme combines a solid theoretical background with laboratory activities and applied projects, providing interdisciplinary skills in audio, music technologies, and multimedia systems, with a strong focus on design, experimentation, and advanced technological applications.

Admission to the Master of Science in Music and Acoustic Engineering is open to students holding an Italian Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, with an adequate background in information and industrial engineering disciplines, in particular in computer engineering, electronics, telecommunications, mathematics, and physics.

For graduates from Politecnico di Milano, the assessment of curricular requirements is carried out automatically based on the study programme completed.

For graduates from other Italian universities, admission is subject to the evaluation of curricular requirements and personal preparation by the relevant Admission Committee, in accordance with the provisions of the Programme Educational Regulations.

Detailed requirements, assessment procedures, and any additional educational obligations are specified in Section 6 of the Programme Educational Regulations

Admission to the Master of Science in Music and Acoustic Engineering is open to students holding a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree awarded by a non-Italian higher education institution, provided that the qualification is recognised as equivalent in level, nature, and academic content to an Italian degree.

Applicants must demonstrate an adequate background in information and industrial engineering disciplines, particularly in computer engineering, electronics, telecommunications, mathematics, and physics. Admission is subject to the evaluation of curricular requirements and personal preparation by the relevant Admission Committee.

The Master of Science in Music and Acoustic Engineering provides advanced education in the fields of sound and acoustic engineering, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates competences in information engineering, acoustics, signal processing, computer engineering, and music technologies.

The study programme covers both theoretical and applied aspects of acoustics, digital audio, and sound signal processing, with particular focus on sound modelling, analysis and synthesis, audio acquisition and reproduction systems, music technologies, and multimedia systems. Students also acquire skills in the design of hardware and software systems for audio, musical, and acoustic applications, as well as in perceptual evaluation and sound quality assessment.

The programme combines theoretical courses, laboratory activities, and project-based work, preparing graduates to address complex problems in the fields of audio, music, acoustics, and multimedia technologies, both in industrial and research contexts.

For a complete description of the educational objectives and programme contents, please refer to the Programme Educational Regulations.

Detailed information on courses, ECTS credits, and programme structure is available in the Study Plan.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Music and Acoustic Engineering are equipped with advanced technical and methodological skills that enable them to pursue a wide range of professional and academic opportunities in the fields of audio, acoustics, music technologies, and multimedia systems.

Career prospects include roles in research and development, design and engineering of audio and acoustic systems, sound and music technology industries, multimedia and entertainment sectors, as well as consulting and innovation-oriented activities.

Graduates may also continue their education through postgraduate study programmes, including second-level Master programmes and PhD programmes in relevant fields such as information engineering, acoustics, signal processing, and related interdisciplinary areas, both in Italy and internationally.

Moreover, the qualification grants access, where applicable, to the State Examination for professional engineering practice, in accordance with current national regulations.
