BSc in Automation Engineering
The Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Automation Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano trains professionals capable of designing, developing and managing complex systems in which mechanical, electronic, computer and control technologies work together to operate machines, plants and processes in an autonomous, efficient and reliable way.
Today, the systems designed by automation engineers are increasingly referred to as examples of Physical AI, meaning artificial intelligence applied to physical systems: technologies capable of perceiving the environment, learning from process behaviour, and acting autonomously and adaptively. This evolution spans robotics, autonomous vehicles, intelligent production systems and digitalised infrastructures, representing the new frontier of automation.
This is a multidisciplinary programme that combines solid scientific foundations with advanced engineering skills, enabling students to understand and model physical systems, use sensors and actuators, and design decision-making logic to guide the behaviour of modern processes.
The complete study path, from the Bachelor’s Degree to the English-taught Master of Science, offers a modern and innovation-oriented education. It opens the way to highly qualified roles in advanced industrial and technological sectors, preparing engineers capable of contributing to the autonomous and intelligent transformation of the systems that will shape industry and society in the coming decades.
Career Opportunities
Graduates in Automation Engineering can enter a wide range of industrial and technological sectors thanks to their interdisciplinary preparation in the modelling, control and management of complex automatic systems. This professional profile is suitable both for the field of industrial automation and for all areas in which the design and supervision of dynamic systems play a central role. The skills acquired enable graduates to contribute to the development and implementation of control solutions for manufacturing processes, automatic machines, industrial and mobile robotics, as well as advanced mechatronic systems.
Graduates also find employment in high‑technology sectors such as aerospace, automotive, energy, transportation and biomedical engineering, where the design of complex systems and of reliable and safe control algorithms is a key requirement. Within manufacturing companies, engineering firms, technical consulting organisations and entities developing technologies for Industry 4.0, bachelor‑level graduates can take on qualified technical roles in design support, implementation of automatic systems, plant management and process supervision, actively contributing to innovation and optimisation in industrial activities.
Post‑graduate Education
The preparation provided by the programme facilitates access to higher‑level educational paths. The natural continuation is the Master of Science in Automation and Control Engineering, which allows students to deepen advanced topics related to control systems, robotics, complex process automation and autonomous systems. These are the technologies commonly referred to as Physical AI—artificial intelligence for physical systems—which are expected to revolutionise virtually all economic sectors.
Graduates also have the opportunity to enrol in first‑level university master programmes and specialised training courses dedicated to production systems, Industry 4.0 technologies, robotics and technological innovation. These programmes, offered by the Politecnico di Milano and other specialised institutions, allow students to strengthen specific competencies and complete their education with a professional orientation aligned with current market needs.
