DROPS, sustainable rainwater management

Project made possible thanks to 5 per thousand donations

Within the Off-Campus Nosedo context, the DROPS project focuses on sustainable rainwater management. Through the installation of a rainwater collection and soil infiltration tank, the project pursues two objectives: preventing sewer network overload and promoting the sustainable reuse of water. In practical terms: preventing flooding and creating a water reserve during drier months, to be used for non-potable purposes such as irrigation or toilet flushing.

Between 2023 and 2024, the researchers developed prototypes for rainwater management systems. The research results were then used in innovative teaching projects, with a field laboratory for water and soil measurements, training for partner organisations and awareness-raising activities for citizens. The data collected show that this water can be used to irrigate the many agricultural areas surrounding the farmstead, reducing pressure on the water supply system. A collection tank has been installed and, through a series of moisture sensors, measurements are currently being carried out to assess the benefits of the infiltration system on the subsoil. The tank level is monitored and flow regulators allow modular use. The weather station is used to plan system activities, including predictive functions.

Like other Politecnico research projects funded through your 5 per thousand donations, DROPS aims to develop solutions that can be implemented in the short term, designed to be replicable and to produce long-term effects; case studies that put into practice technologies developed in larger projects and provide students and researchers with the opportunity to apply what they have learned.
